Individual, enthusiastic about the sport and crisis-resistant: the diving tourist
When not diving in their local waters, diving tourists from Europe mainly visit five principal destinations: the Red Sea, Maldives, Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
During the summer months, the majority of divers concentrate on short haul destinations such as the Mediterranean and the Red Sea; the demand for the long-haul is greater in the colder months of the year. Local sites in divers’ home countries are dived throughout the year, with an emphasis on the summer months. European divers who typically take their main holidays in warmer regions amount to over one million active individuals, and they go away up to three times per year.
The average diver’s holiday for five to seven days costs about €750 without diving. Additionally, they spend another €300 to €400 for the diving package, the diving course or on additional equipment and fees. The length of a trip to remote areas is on average longer with significantly extra costs. However, remote destinations are not booked as frequently. The cost of a diving liveaboard holiday is almost twice as high as a typical shore-based holiday.
Although some diving tourists visit a destination exclusively for diving, many want to combine diving with other activities, such as tennis, golf, hiking, bicycling or other water-related activities. European tourists are generally very environmentally conscious and appreciate efforts made to achieve best sustainability practices in the diving tourism industry.
